What Happened in the Garden?

By Stewart Topping …

How do we get from being disobedient with God to being obedient?

We are told to believe in the Death, Burial and Resurrection of Jesus our Lord in order to be saved. This is what the Apostle Paul said was the gospel.  Don’t confuse the gospels as the true gospel. The gospel means good news.

Lets look at 1 Cor. 15:1-4 … 1 Now I make known unto you brethren, the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye received, wherein also ye stand, 2 by which also ye are saved, if ye hold fast the word which I preached unto you, except ye believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which also I received: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 and that he was buried; and that he hath been raised on the third day according to the scriptures;

It might seem complicated, but please follow me; God has planned this out from the beginning and we need to understand his plan of redemption, righteousness and forgiveness.

Now we know there is a debt because of what Adam has done, we know that Jesus paid the debt by giving his life on the cross.  The only thing we must do is to believe; to receive salvation and to have the debt paid.  Let me cite an example; it’s like going to court and having someone else pay the fine (debt) for our judgment (transgression).

Now look at the events from the time that Adams sinned by disobeying God  to today where we find ourselves.  We know that because of the disobedience in the garden we have received the disobedient  nature from Adam.  This nature caused by what Adam did has a debt attached to it and it must be paid.  The debt for the disobedience of Adam must be paid.  The new nature of Adam cause us to separate from God, not allowing us to build a relationship of trust with God.

When we study the Bible and we will understand what Jesus has done for us to bring us into a relationship with God. (by his death, burial and resurrection, 1 Cor. 15:1-4)  We find that Jesus has cleansed us and cleaned the slate with his death and paid the debt.

That means that we can start over.

Romans 3:21-22 (KJV) 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

Somehow he clothes us with his salvation. Covers us with the robe of righteousness, we haven’t done anything to deserve it. (This what is called Grace).  But I will believe God that He has said it; then by Faith it is done. I am free, free indeed.

Notice the next verse shows; our righteousness of God is by faith in Jesus Christ and upon all that believe. We can receive the righteousness (being in right standing with God; debt paid) of God if we believe.  God has imputed his righteousness to us and on us when we believe. That means we are in right standing with God after the shed blood of Jesus along with his death on the cross.

Isaiah 61:10 (KJV) 10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness,as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

Isaiah says that there is a covering of Salvation and righteousness. So then when God sees us he sees the covering on us.  His righteousness has covered our sins.

Romans 3:23-24 (KJV) 23 for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Now this verse says that we are justified freely by God’s grace through redemption; we have been redeemed (or bought back, someone paid the debt) by God and He see’s us free of what Adam had done and since Jesus has paid the debt.

When we are justified; it means that we are clean and it is just as if we had not sinned at all.

Now the following verse will show that we have forgiveness; it’s the redemption (bought back) through the shed blood of Jesus and the free gift of grace.  This type of grace only became available through the Death, Burial and resurrection of Jesus, not before.

Ephesians 1:7 (KJV) 7 in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

From the beginning God had a plan that we would be redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, not with silver and gold.

1 Peter 1:18-20 (KJV) 18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

Sometimes it is hard to understand why God does certain things; ever His ways are different than ours.  But all we have to do is believe, trust his word.  Now faith comes from believe God at His word.  We were not there the day Jesus went to the cross but we must believe it took place and  believe we are saved through faith.

Hebrews 11:1-3 (KJV) 1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Just Believe and you will notice the change!
