Study and Study

By Stewart Topping …

Personal Bible Study is important and at the same time getting  involved in a group so that there can be a discussion, not just to have someone preach, teach or present material that may or not be true.    We have to make sure that the material is actually correct.  I do not want to have my salvation, eternity and Christian growth along with my relationship with God rest in the hands of another. Some would think that going to Sunday school class at Church would is considered studying.  Others think that defending their position is studying, rather then in both cases learning to study for the truth.

Do you know someone like this?

Recently I asked someone about their salvation; I asked are you saved and the answer was I hope so.  My first thought was he has not studied to be sure and I hope the Fire Insurance Policy he bought into is correct.

It is important that you believe God can confirm all things in his word?

That also includes my peace with God and my security.   Many Christians today do not have the peace of God.  I think because they do not confirm what they have heard as to whether it is true.   That makes them uncertain about their Salvation, there security and how to proceed with their relationship with God. Most think that as long as they have the Fire Insurance Policy issued by some person or place they are saved and will go to heaven.  Do we know when that policy comes due, it will provide the coverage you think it will?

Please think about this!  Why is it that there are around 24 different types of Christian Churches that have different doctrines concerning salvation, eternity, Christian growth and how to have a relationship with God?  Can they all be right?  In a recent survey of Christians, 75 % believe that there are different ways to Heaven and many ways to obtain salvation. Doesn’t that scare you?  We should study not only to help our self but our family and our friends.

We should be able to back up our beliefs with hard facts not assumptions.

I think the key to unlocking the door of truth is written in the following verse:

2 Timothy 2:15 ”Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (KJV)

key elements of that scripture verse?

  1. Show (shew)- If we don’t study or have verbal discussions how can we show to God we care or are interested in Him.
  2. Approved– I’m not sure if there is a grading process or not, but I think that those that attempt to study and converse with others you would get an A+.
  3. Workman– That does point to someone like us putting some time in to study so that we might know the truth.
  4. Not to be ashamed– How many people are afraid to talk about their God and his Salvation, etc. Could it be that they would be ashamed.
  5. Rightly dividing the word of truth– How can you divide the Word, Gods Word without studying.  I don’t know about you but I need discussion as well to firmly fit the blocks of my life on the Cornerstone of my Faith. So that as I build my faith it is sure and sound.

Ephesians 4:14 (NKJV) “that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting”,

This is what happens if we allow other to teach us, yes we can listen to preaching, teaching and read material provided.

1 John 2:27 (NKJV)  “But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him”.

Satan wants confusion with our beliefs!

His main goal is getting people who don’t want to investigate the truth on their own, then tell other’s and then confuse them. Why?  So he can be like God.

Remember the 24 types of Christian Churches, how do you know which is the correct one.

The people are always nice and some are friends or family.  The Pastor is a great guy, but we are talking about our spiritual health and it is up to us to know and share the truth.  Allow the Holy Spirit to teach and train you to know and share Gods word.

What is True Salvation?

By Stewart Topping …

1 Cor 15:1-4 (NKJV)1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you–unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,

First do we take Salvation as a serious event in our lives?  Do we think that we are good people by going to Church?  Do we think that helping at the Church will help pay for our sins?  The more people I talk to the more I find that people do not take there Salvation that seriously.untitled.II

Maybe that it takes time to think about it.  Most people don’t study the Bible to prove what is said, so they believe what the Pastor says.  Now He may be 100% correct, but how do you know.  When the day comes, you might say “I had no idea it would be this horrible”.

Think about these scriptures and then STUDY THEM

13 You were once dead because of your failures and your uncircumcised corrupt nature. But God made you alive with Christ when he forgave all our failures. 14 He did this by erasing the charges that were brought against us by the written laws God had established. He took the charges away by nailing them to the cross.  Col 2:13-14 (GW).

Here is the big question?  How many times does Jesus have to die for your Failures.  We are told that our sins are failures in our Adamic  nature and when Salvation takes place Jesus replaced that nature with the Holy Spirit, our new nature, by paying the penalty with his life on the cross.

Here is what I want you to think about.  Does that mean that all sins are paid for once and for all at the time of our Salvation.

Should we continue to ask for repentance, forgiveness, each time we have a failure or should we thanks him each time for the price he already paid for.  When Jesus said it is finished, was his death a one time event

Who’s works? Man’s or God’s

By Stewart Topping …

Hebrews 3:15-19 (NKJV) 15 while it is said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” 16 For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? 17 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. So what happened after the Jewish people followed Moses; they went through the Red Sea, then moved through the wilderness and then stood at the Jordan River.  It would seem that after discussion with God they didn’t want to go into the land of Canaan.  God called it the promise land; given to Abraham if he was obedient to the covenant with God, which he was.

Genesis 17:7-8 (KJV) 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

They were to follow the instruction that God had given them; but instead they sent spies to check out the land, (they did not need to check it out), and when they returned they reported to the leaders that there were giants in the land of Canaan. That bothered them even more. What’s really funny is that God told them he would fight their battles and allow them to occupy the land; all they had to do was hear his voice and believe God at his word.

Hebrews 4:10 (KJV) 10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

It would seem that Jewish people did not cease from their own works. This is why we have so many problems with our walk with God.  He wants to talk to us, but we are too busy.  He wants to lead us, but we want check out where we are going first.  He wanted to do all the work for us, actually it has already been done since the foundation of the world.  God planned it before we were born.

It was not the sins that the Jewish people committed, wild partying when Moses went up the mountain, and it was not the strange golden calf that they created and worshiped.  It was the unbelief.  The message is simple, but we complicate it.  We try to analyze it, check it out.  We listen to other people; we listen to people who teach incorrectly.  We are told to listen God (hear his voice) and obey (follow His instructions).  Believing God means that you need to cease from trying to do something in order to gain salvation and to learn how to just rest and let Gods do the work.

The Jewish people suffered for forty years in the wilderness and they died in the wilderness.  It took 40 years to change their thinking and to trust God in the wilderness.  God raised up a new generation of people.  The new generation did obey God and went across the Jordan River.

Galatians is a good epistle; to realize that works are a law unto itself.

Resting is a cessation from all work (our work) and cessation from activities concerning God (we are to accept God word).

Galatians 2:16 (KJV) 16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Our salvation comes from believing God not working for our salvation. There is nothing you or I can do to earn our salvation.  It is a free gift from God thru the shed blood of Jesus

Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV) 8 for by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

How many times to we think that we have to earn our salvation, do something.  But God has said it is a gift of God.    What do people think they have to do to get saved?

1.    Water baptism.
a.    They think that water is part of their salvation.
b.    Water baptism is a good witness to others.
2.    Good works.
a.    Donating time and money for worthy causes.
b.    Good outweighing the bad we do in life.
3.    Going to Church.
a.    Tithing.
b.    Serving on Church Boards.
c.    Belonging to the right Church.
4.    Hanging around the right people.

Let take a moment at look at what the Bible says about rest, God rested on the seventh day because the work was already done.  Nothing left to do.  We must believe that all the work for our salvation has been done.  If God said; Jesus would die, would be buried and that He would be resurrected by the power of God and all we had to do was believe him. Then why do we try to work our way into heaven.

Remember just believe God and receive the Holy Spirit and be Born Again. God will give you a new life!  That new life will be forgiven; your sins gone.  Remember it’s not your sins that will keep you out of heaven; it will be your unbelief!

It’s your chose!

Are you resting in Jesus?

Was this letter written to you?

By Stewart Topping …

Have you ever thought that God might have different plans for the Human race over the last 6000 years? Let me give you an example. I don’t think we will offer a sacrifice in the temple today. That was a time for the Children of Israel to learn who God was and what was expected of them. To fulfill the prophecy of Jesus, their messiah.  Paul said the Law was a schoolmaster for us.

Galatians 3:24 (KJV) 24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.Have you ever wondered if God has written parts of the Bible for different people?  Well if we look at whose address is given at the beginning of each letter or who is the audience it is written to, it would help us to rightly divide the word and it would give us a better understanding of the Bible. (2 Tim 2:15)We may believe something that was written for someone else.  If the letter is addressed to the Jewish people under the Law; would we pay any attention to it since we are not under the Law?The Apostle Paul says to the Gentiles;

Romans 11:13 (KJV)  I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: Now here we find that Paul was talking to the Gentiles, the heathens, not the Children of Israel.

The Apostle James says to the Nation of Israel; James 1:1 (KJV) James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.

So in these two cases we found that James was addressing his letter to the Children of Israel, which were the twelve tribes of Israel. (These are the sons of Israel; Jacobs name was changed to Israel by God).  Now here is another interesting verse; see what Paul is saying;

Galatians 2:7 (KJV) 7 But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the Uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter.

The Children of Israel are called the circumcision and the  heathen which are the Gentiles are called the uncircumcised.  Here he is dividing us into two groups of people, one for a ministry for Peter and the Twelve and the other group a ministry for Paul.We could go on and on and find that God has deal with different groups since Noah.  Look at some of the things that God revealed over time.  He called Noah and then He revealed the flood to him and the need to build the ark.  He called Abraham to begin a journey to Canaan and to start a new Nation.  He called Moses to lead the Children of Israel out of Egypt. Then we see that even before Paul revealed the Death, Burial and Resurrection to the Gentiles in 1Cor. 15:1-4.Jesus even told the Disciples but they did not understand it.

Read the following verse. Mark 9:30-32 (KJV) 30 And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it. 31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. 32 But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.Why would Jesus tell them something that they did not understand?

Could it be to emphasis a point in God’s time table, was this for us to understand the secret hid in God?  Paul says the revelation of the mystery that he would be preaching would be part of his Gospel.  The Gospel is the Good news of the Body of Christ and the age of Grace.  The twelve were told before His death but didn’t know it was in the Old Testament in Isaiah Chapter 53.  They might have read it but didn’t understand it.  The same is true today; only those that God want to understand will. Today the non believer cannot understand the things of God.Should we do what the Christian of Israel was told in the Old Testament like keeping the sin offering or the holidays, maybe the Sabbath and the Sabbatical year?  All are written in the scripture but not to the same audience. Let’s look at two verses concerning works, one by the Apostle Paul and the other by one of the twelve, James.

The Apostle Paul says to the Gentiles; Galatians 2:16 (KJV) 16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

The Apostle James says to the Nation of Israel; James 2:24 (KJV) 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

Why the difference?  One was under the Law and the other under grace.  Here is a great example of the two different messages. Jews had to follow the Law, which were works, to be justified; today after the death of Jesus we are to follow grace not works. Both must believe what God has written to each group.  One is written to a group of people before the cross, the other after the cross. God’s only purpose is to create fellowship for Himself, with people that believe in him and want to please him.  If we can see that God is in control and has a message for us, we can trust Him more each day as we study and rightly divide the word of God.What is the revelation of the Mystery which was kept secret since the world began?

It must have been important if it was only revealed to Paul after Christ died on the cross. Remember it was not revealed to Israel or to the twelve Apostles. Why God would keep something secret is more than a coincidence; even when Jesus told the Disciples it was not the correct time for them to understand.

Romans 16:25 (KJV) 25 now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,God would over time reveal what He was going to do when He wanted to do it.  If He revealed it before the time it would affect the plan that was in effect.  What is the Mystery?  If satan knew what was going to happen when Jesus died on the cross he would have prevented it from taken place.

Colossians 1:26-28 (KJV) 26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: 28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.

We are the Saints, the body of Christ, not the Nation of Israel. Remember Paul is the Apostle called to the Gentiles, and we are the Gentiles.  Remember when you are reading scripture to see who God is speaking to.  Is it to those under the Law or thought under grace.
